Devon Monk is casting a spell on the fantasy world...

Using magic means it uses you back, and every spell exacts a price from its user. But some people get out of it by Offloading the cost of magic onto an innocent. Then it’s Allison Beckstrom’s job to identify the spell-caster. Allie would rather live a hand-to-mouth existence than accept the family fortune—and the strings that come with it. But when she finds a boy dying from a magical Offload that has her father’s signature all over it, Allie is thrown back into his world of black magic. And the forces she calls on in her quest for the truth will make her capable of things that some will do anything to control...

Urban fantasy has a new female mage in Allie Beckstrom who has an unusual relationship with magic

Magic to the Bone is an urban fantasy novel by Devon Monk. I can't help compare the main character,

Allison Beckstrom with Harry Dresden of the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. Both are magic users in worlds were magic exists but is not completely believed or understood. They also both tend to have bad luck or stick their noses into trouble that tends to get them hurt.

There are some significant difference beside the obvious that Allie is female and Harry is male though. In the world Allie lives in magic is well known yet very limited. You see magic comes with a cost and for every time a person uses magic someone must pay the price. The concept is called offloading and is a significant part of the plot.

In the beginning a boy is very sick due to someone making him ill by magic. Allie determines that the magic signature points pack to her estranged father who is a strong magic user and also runs a large company that develops magically devices. I won't give away the plot but Allie finds herself with some powerful enemies.

Allie also finds herself in a steamy relationship with a man that can service as a magical ground as her magic surprisingly grows beyond her ability to control it.

I think this series has some real potential but must of the story involved her meeting a new man, running from bad guys, and healing from her injuries. She also forgets parts of her short term memories after using magic which got a little old after a while.

If you like your fantasy more on the erotic side than I do and like urban fantasy stories similar to the Dresden Files I recommend that you give the series a try. I rate it three out of five stars as I would like to have seen more action and plot development than was delivered in the first book.
