Too long and anti-climatic ending

Nothing seems to delay my book reviews more than the holidays. Well, maybe one thing delays them more and that is extremely long books.  Pandora's Star at 992 pages or over 37 hours is massive and truth too be told way longer than it needed to be. There are some excellent parts of this SciFi novel including the first contact with an alien race in their home world and the aliens subsequent response.  However, the author takes the plot on too many tangents that never conclude in a satisfactory way. I...

The Wraith Squadron is back with new members taking down corruption

Mercy Kill is a Star Wars book that involves a group of spies called the Wraith Squadron that plan to bring down a corrupt Galactic Alliance general.    This was a decent Star Wars audio book with the usual well-done audio effects but it doesn't live up to many other Star Wars stories.  The team have an odd assortment of characters of different races and backgrounds but I didn’t feel I got to know many of them well in the story.  I also felt that the end of the story was original but not very satisfying.  That...

Classis super hero story that is a must read for scifi/superhero fans

Very rarely if ever have a reread a book but Wild Cards 1 is one of those rare books. Well, full disclosure here, I actually listened to it as an audiobook this time. Wild Cards 1 is a must read classic super hero story from 1987 that still is great. The book consists of a collection of short stories about super powered Aces and mutated Jokers that were transformed by an alien virus.    Several of the stories were great such as those about Dr. Tachyon, the alien that couldn't prevent the release of the virus but...
