Troubled teen learns about his Native American heritage as he travels through time

I enjoyed Flight about a teenage boy who bounces between multiple foster homes. Much of it is his fault as he misbehaves and runs away frequently. Suddenly he finds himself in the bodies of several different people as a time traveler reliving several historical events.   This novel moved quickly at a length of under 5 hours as an audiobook. There are several well down stories where the young man is a Native American or a member of General Custer's army who fought Native Americans at the Battle of Bighorn. I give it four out of five...

The Ten-Cent Plague changed my life!

OK, that was an attention-getting headline but let me explain what I mean. I have been a card carrying comic book collector for over 32 years now without stopping. I have collected Marvel and DC superhero comics books such as Avengers, Daredevil, Captain America, Justice League, and Superman back to the 1960s. But I never knew much about the history of the golden age of comics from the 1940s and 1950s.   This book tells a great story about the creators of the golden age comics. Comic books were the main source of entertainment for kids back...

On Top of Spumoni is the funniest romantic comedy I have ever read

OK, I admit it is also the first romantic comedy I have ever read. This is a funny and erotic book about a down on his luck, very overweight young man named Cooper Spanoli who literally runs into the woman of his dreams, twice! Cooper is one of the nice guys that women would like but he lives with his parents, has very little confidence, no experience, and has really let his looks and body go over the years. But times are changing after a gorgeous young woman actually knocks him down on...

Objective and enjoyable telling of the overnight fight against heavily armed Somalis

Black Hawk Down is not a book of fiction, instead it is the actual retelling of the 18 hours that U.S. troops battled for their lives against thousands of heavily armed Somalia citizens in an attempt to rescue their fellow soldiers. I usually only review fictional books and simply must say that if you enjoy books about military history then Black Hawk Down is a must read. However, if I rate it just as a fictional story (which it is not so I realize this might seem...

Fun read about witches and werewolfs in a Victorian era

The busy season at work and with kids sports is slowing down so it is time to get caught up with a bunch of book reviews. So up next is the young adult mystery and thriller Julia Vanishes by Catherine Egan.    This was an enjoyable read about Julia, a young woman who can't actually turn invisible but instead can become unseen. She takes a job as a housekeeper at an elderly ladies residence but is actually a spy planning to steal something from the house. There are an interesting group of characters at the house including the old...
